THE CHALLENGE
In 2020, DIFC Academy needed a redesign to enhance the functionality and comfort of its learning spaces. Over the years, various spatial interventions had created a patchwork of design approaches, resulting in an inconsistent and inefficient environment. Our challenge was to transform this fragmented space into a cohesive, multifunctional area that could accommodate diverse learning needs, social interactions, and events, all while maintaining a unified design language and ensuring physical comfort for users.
THE TRANSFORMATION APPROACH
Using insights from over 80 hours of field research, we developed a cohesive design that treated the space as if carved from a single block of wood. The new design emphasizes four key areas: focus, idea exchange, co-production, and connection, ensuring that every corner of the space encourages collaboration. We worked with the existing structure, adding interventions to maximize its use, from collaboration zones to spaces for individual focus.
THE IMPACT
The redesigned space has elevated the overall user experience at DIFC Academy, providing flexible environments for focused learning, group collaboration, and social interaction. The revamped lecture theater has improved engagement, while the additional seminar rooms offer valuable space for smaller, interactive sessions. The cohesive design language, paired with strategic space planning, has transformed the Academy into a model of functional and aesthetic efficiency.
THE COMMUNITY LENS
With a community-first mindset, we focused on creating spaces that foster both collaboration and meaningful connections. By understanding the unique needs and behaviors of DIFC Academy’s diverse users, we designed areas that inspire spontaneous interaction and build trust. The reimagined spaces encourage deep connections, turning routine encounters into opportunities for creativity and collaboration. Through this design approach, we’ve laid the groundwork for a vibrant learning community, where every interaction strengthens the sense of belonging and collective growth.
