“Media Literacy for Lifelong Learning: Why Media Literacy Matters in the Age of Social Media and ‘Fake News” workshop is organized by ATÖLYE, imeceLAB, and the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul on Monday, March 11 at ATÖLYE. This event is designed for educators, those working on education policy and curriculum development, and individuals and working with students through summer schools, NGOs and other organizations.

Cyndy Scheibe from Project Look Sharp at Ithaca College will give an interactive presentation and workshop on media literacy and critical thinking. The participants will experience constructivist media decodings, and learn more about the key issues that come up when educators lead students through a media analysis. We will also talk about critical thinking and the most recent research on teaching students to evaluate news and information sources and give some examples of other approaches to media literacy, including ways to engage students in media creation/production.

The concept of “media literacy” is the ability to access, analyze, critically evaluate, and produce communication in a variety of forms. It is similar to information literacy and involves many components of technology literacy as well.

Media literacy education helps individuals of all ages develop the habits of inquiry and skills of expression that they need to be critical thinkers, effective communicators and active citizens in today’s world. imeceLAB is working with its youth community on inquiring and producing information from a critical perspective, ATÖLYE has various projects on education ranging from spatial design to learning design. In this context, imeceLAB and ATÖLYE are bringing people from different disciplines together in this event.

The event will be held in English. Simultaneous Turkish translation will be provided if necessary.
